Consultation on the draft standards of proficiency for social workers in England

18/07/2011 - 18/11/2011

This consultation has now closed. You can download a document summarising the responses we received to the consultation and the decisions we made below.

We have now published the standards of proficiency for social workers in England. You can find the standards here.

We are consulting on draft standards of proficiency for social workers in England.

We have produced a joint statement with the Social Work Reform Board about the role of the standards of proficiency and the Professional Capabilities Framework. Please click here to read the statement.

Last year, the Department of Health published ‘Liberating the NHS: Report of the arm’s-length bodies review’. That report said that the government intended to transfer the regulation of social workers in England to the Health Professions Council. Since then, the government has published the Health and Social Care Bill, which includes provisions for the transfer of regulation from the General Social Care Council (GSCC) to the HPC. The Health and Social Care Bill is currently before Parliament.

We are therefore making preparations in advance of the transfer of regulatory functions from the GSCC to ourselves. As part of our preparations, we are consulting on draft standards of proficiency for social workers in England.

The standards of proficiency are the standards necessary for safe and effective practice for each part of the Register. The standards outline what an individual must know, understand and be able to do when they enter the Register and start practising their profession.

We set up a working group, called a Professional Liaison Group (PLG), to help us to set these draft standards. The PLG involved key stakeholders from within the field of social work in England. You can find more information on the PLG here.

We are inviting all stakeholders with an interest to respond to this consultation and look forward to receiving your response.
